We always have things to do and are open to new ideas!
Signing up
No prior experience is needed to volunteer, and there's no need to make up-front commitments. Once you've contacted us, you'll be added to our Telegram chat where you can introduce yourself and sign up for any of our roles. All our of decisions are made horizontally and by consensus amongst all of our members.
What can you help with?
Most volunteering will occur on the afternoons and evenings of Thursday and Sunday each week. We try to have at least two volunteers on each role, so nobody has to do things alone unless they want to.
The most common roles are:
- Finding food (from friends, restaurants, grocery stores, dumpsters, and/or food hubs)
- Transporting food to the cooks
- Washing, preparing, cooking, and packaging food
- Transporting cooked food and gear to our serve location
- Serving our food to the public
On Thursday, cooking usually happens at the Addison Road Community Centre. If you have a reasonably large kitchen space, you can also offer this for our Sunday cooks! We serve food at Camperdown Memorial Park, or at Newtown Station in case of rainy weather.
There are also plenty of supplementary roles, which are also extremely important for us:
- Providing ideas and advice. Even if you are completely new, we value your contribution!
- Creating art and literature about Food Not Bombs (and related ideas) for us to distribute at serve.
- Facilitating and attending our monthly meetings.
- Organising with local events (such as gigs, protests or union actions) which we can serve at.
- Anything else you can think of!
Remember: Because of the horizontal structure of our organisation, responsibility and initiative are put into your hands. In other words, we're all just winging it. The secret to getting involved is to join in! We're a friendly bunch and we're all learning and figuring things out as we go :)
